For years, pracs were telling me I had to stop stressing. That my out-of-control stress levels, anxiety, were driving my health issues and blocking me from getting better.
At the time, I was doing everythinggg to stop stressing - therapy, yoga, meditation, self-care practices, journaling - but I couldn’t turn the stress off.
It turns out, stress wasn’t the problem; it was the solution
This may sound ass backwards, how is stress the solution? Doesn't stress cause every health issue and disease?
Well, yes, yes it does.
To your body, stress is the solution.
The solution to you being in danger.
Stress is the activation of your sympathetic fight-or-flight nervous system. When you’re in danger, your brain perceives the threat, turns this pathway on, and all processes in your body shift to keep you alive - aka protect you from the threat.
Your blood sugar is increased, your digestion slows, blood goes to your extremities, your brain is focused on the moment, your breath quickens, etc
This stress is essential to your survival.
You NEED it.
But you probably don’t need it when you’re sitting at home watching TV, or when you’re sending an email, or you’re making dinner, or driving your kids to sports.
For many of us, we have gotten stuck in this pathway, and we’re using it WAY more often than we need because…
Your brain doesn’t believe that you’re safe.
Stress isn’t the problem; your lack of safety is.
You can do all the yoga you want, but if your brain doesn’t believe you’re safe, you’ll still feel stressed.
It’s not about “stop stressing”, it's about SHOWING your body that you’re safe.
