How to Make Your New Year Resolutions Stick? Work with Your Nervous System
You’ve probably done it once or 40 times, where you get all excited about setting a new years resolution saying “this is the year that I will ___” only to find yourself back to your regular habits come February 1st…🫠
But then there are people like my best friend Samantha, who set a New Year's resolution and are still building on it 5 years later.
What’s the difference between resolutions that stick and ones that don’t?
Staying within your capacity - let me explain.
Your nervous system has a set capacity for what it can handle (this is called the window of tolerance). Once you go over your capacity (aka safety zone), you’ll find yourself in fight or flight. For a while, fight or flight will work; you’ll be able to go to the gym 5 days a week or not eat any carbs, but after a while, your body won’t be able to keep going. You’ll end up in the freeze (hypo) response, and old patterns will come back again.
It’s not that you couldn’t reach your goals, it’s that you weren’t working with your nervous system to make sustainable change happen
So what do you do instead?
Instead of running full force ahead, start slow.
Like Samantha did 5 years ago, she started with 2, 2, 2, - only eating out twice a week, going to the gym twice a week, and walking twice a week. After 4 months of setting that foundation, she stayed within her capacity and could build on it.
5 years later - she’s 75 lbs lighter, loving her daily gym routine, eats healthy because she enjoys feeling good, and feels more her true self than ever before. Check out her story on YouTube
Starting Slow: It’s not the trendy thing to do, and not what most of your new year emails will tell you, but if there is one thing I know, it’s that your nervous system dictates almost everything and you need to work together
